Recipe for “Glowing Skin Wine”
I’ve cut my alcohol consumption down drastically, because I have so much more energy and such nicer skin without drinking.
But there are still those occasions that call for a “festive” drink, and where you wish you could drink alcohol because water just isn’t celebratory or special enough.
In one such moment of desperation, I created this drink. Now, it doesn’t taste a thing like wine/champagne, but it does have similar characteristics. It is:
- a beautiful magenta hue
- slightly fizzy
- complex, earthy and intriguing in taste
- easy to sip/savor as opposed to slam down
The basic recipe is:
1 part beet juice
1 part kombucha
Mix and drink cold, or on the rocks! The beet juice gives you blood cleansing, hormone support and liver support, plus that unimitable earthy, sweet beet taste (which I love – if you don’t I have a variation for you in one second). The kombucha gives you gut-healthy fermentation and probiotics.
The beautiful thing is, you know all the flavors of kombucha out there – and the juice doesn’t have to be beet, it can be another boldly flavored/colored juice like carrot, my second fave. You can mix the carrot and beet as well. So the flavor combos are endless.
And if you have a Trader Joe’s nearby, you can buy the beet juice and carrot juice pre-juiced and super conveniently in bottles. (I’m sure you can get them from other natural groceries/farmer’s markets as well – or of course, juice them yourself.) As long as I’m endorsing, my favorite kombucha brand is GT’s, which you can find at whole foods. 🙂
Why am I specifically focused on beet and carrot juice? Well, these juices are relatively low in sugar, compared to fruit juices like apple and orange, but they do still have sweetness to them. The juices also have really outstanding health benefits – I listed the benefits of beet above. Carrot has loads of vitamin A.
And I really like the slight earthiness that these juices have, since carrot and beet are both root veggies. This makes it more like real wine – at least to me. Other beverages that have similar characteristics to wine include teas – also very complex notes, so feel free to use some iced green tea or whatever else have you.
And, convenience. Like I said earlier, these happen to be two juices I can buy at TJs. If I COULD buy other juices like pure cucumber juice, pure celery (whatever other veggies are usually used as “bases” in juicing) I would, and I would experiment.
But the key is that, since this is a replacement for wine, it should taste yummy and make you feel festive! (And hopefully be good for you as well!)
