The needs of your skin most definitely change with the seasons and the transition seasons (Spring and Fall) are often the bumpiest waves to ride.
I’m sharing the journey I’ve been on so far personally, in hopes of inspiring you.
During the later stages of my pregnancy (Early Summer), my skin got dry as a bone. Very little sebum meant no breakouts, but helped etch lines deeper. After giving birth, I was blessed with a latent lack of acne, but my sebum production ramped up. My little one was A LOT of work then, and I was lucky to get 5 minutes to myself, so I did uber minimal with maximum return, which meant AMBAR’s Micellar Cleansing Essence and Daily Antioxidant Primer both am and pm. Both of these products are such multi-taskers and full of powerful actives so despite the apparent dearth of product, it’s 100% quality over quantity. The Daily Antioxidant Primer is the perfect amount of lightweight moisture and it’s so protective and reparative.
I was 3 months postpartum and my hormones were (are) extremely active. Hair falling out, skin is congested, my period came back and with it the typical breakouts. My late summer minimal routine was now feeling woefully inadequate.
Of course, my go-to for congestion is Illumina and I started applying this every pm. Thankfully, within days, there was a noticeable difference. I still used mostly the Micellar Essence to clean in the pm, but started using Beurre Céleste every few nights. I love how this instantly smooths my skin. I’d apply a cocktail of Daily Antioxidant Primer and Soothing Moisture Fluid over Illumina to keep my skin healthy, hydrated and calm at night. I mixed equal parts of them in an anointing bowl.
Still did Micellar Cleansing Essence and Daily Antioxidant Primer in the am, but added on Soothing Moisture Fluid more and more often either before DAP or after – either works and for me, it is often purely a matter of which I reach for first, and whether after applying it, I feel like I need the other too.
I found myself reaching for Hydrating Mineral Gelée more and more often both am and pm as a layer that is both hydrating and aids in keeping acne at bay, and now that the congestion was resolving, I scaled back my use of Illumina to once or twice a week.
I find a rhythm and ritual I’m loving. In the evening, I either use Micellar Cleansing Essence or Beurre Céleste to cleanse, although I’ve been using the Fall mask, Velvet Resin/Autumn Sovereign (launching soon) as a cleanser as well. It works similarly to Beurre Céleste. I then make an emulsion with Aurum Luminosity Elixir and Hydrating Mineral Gelée – I find this to be quite powerful for keeping acne at bay and I love how pure and lovely and moss 1.0 it feels.
This is a recipe I highly encourage you to try! I came up with it after my skin experienced a very weird breakout – overnight, multiple big, swollen blemishes erupted – even in places where I don’t usually tend to breakout. It felt like a breakout due to an allergy, but I couldn’t pinpoint the cause!
The blemishes looked like they wanted to stick around for a while, and for a day or two, I reverted in panic to what I always tell people NOT to do – I went to war! I was applying skincare in a harsh and reactive way, and my skin and soul immediately felt and showed it. After two days, I came to my senses and just felt intuitively drawn to the combo of Au and HMG.
Aurum was a surprise – usually I find it superfluous except for “special treat” applications here and there, but with this breakout pushing me to resolve it with love but with certainty, I fell back in love with the intensity and power of the concentrated oil blend that is Aurum. Its heady scent is beautifully lightened by blending it with HMG for a new aromatherapy experience. I spot treated with Zen Physic (haven’t had to use this in over a year!), but only in the pm. And thankfully, the blemishes disappeared quicker than I could have hoped. But having seen how well the Au+HMG combo worked and felt, it quickly became my go-to.
Having pulled ZP out of my closet, I am now back in love with it and sometimes just mix in a drop to my beloved HMG and Au micro-emulsion. As far as the precise recipe of the emulsion goes, I adjust the richness with the ratio – if I want something very emollient, I use more Au and if something lighter, I use more HMG. But usually I do 1/2 and 1/2.
In the am, it’s cleanse with MCE, then a micro-emulsion of HMG and Soothing Moisture Fluid. For some reason, I am really into cocktailing different products together and applying only one layer to my skin, rather than applying those products separately in different layers. It’s both more economical (since you end up using less of each product) and more luxurious, because it feels so custom and crafted.
So I find myself evolved quite aways away from what I swore was my holy grail routine in the Summer, and am reminded of the importance (and pleasure) of dancing with our skin, always listening and responding.
